Occurrence of Transfusion Transmitted Infections Among Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia Patients in A Tertiary Care Hospital in India

Background: Blood transfusion is an important treatment modality in the modern health care system; however, transmitted infections(TTI) could be fatal or life-threatening some cases.Objective: To determine occurrence of infections among dependent thalassemia patients and to study socio-demographic characteristics recipients.Methods: This hospital-based descriptive longitudinal studywas conducted between February 2019 June 2020, on 102 transfusion-dependentthalassaemic receiving blood at Bankura Sammilani Medical College & Hospital, Bankura,West Bengal, India. They were tested for HIV, HBV, HCV, syphilis malaria by ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) Lisa Scan EM, Merilisa HBsAg, RPR kit Maleriscan Pf/Pv.Results: Out patients, 5.90% positive TTI. The highest was found HCV 3.90%. HBV HIV showed similar 0.98% none came out malaria. TTI females 66.7%. average age participants 7.97±3.27years. number received per year 11.95±2.71units. Majority belong low socio- economic group family 62(60.8%). In respect ethnicity 14.7%were tribal, while 85.3%were non-tribal population.Conclusion: cause high prevalence may due donors being asymptomatic early stages failure detection window period infection. More sensitive screening tests should done HCV. All must screened NAT if not possible regularly.Thalassemia most affected, premarital done.Every patient vaccinated with hepatitis B vaccine.International Journal Human Health Sciences Vol. 07 No. 02 April’23 Page: 171-175
